<span style="background-color: black; color: white;"><b>When did you launch your zine? What inspired you to do so?</b><img height="14" hspace="8" src="http://www.zinebook.com/images/blank.gif" width="14" /><tt>Mark:</tt> We launched bOING bOING in 1988. I was a mechanical engineer designed one of about 100 parts. It took months and months to design and test your assigned part. All the engineers knew each other by what parts they were designing. I was the motor guy. The engineer next to me was the flex lead guy. On Fridays we'd go to lunch with the actuator guy and the spacer ring guy and talk about sports and imported cars. I hate sports and I hate cars built after 1960, so even the meals were unsatisfying. I needed some kind of creative outlet, so Carla and I decided to start a zine. We decided to explore the coolest, wackiest stuff we could think of, and came up with the name bOING bOING. Bouncing through our crazy world.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: white;"><b>Why publish a zine?</b><img height="14" hspace="8" src="http://www.zinebook.com/images/blank.gif" width="14" /><tt>Mark:</tt> I love zines because one person can be responsible for all 100 parts. There's no money in it, but it can lead to paying gigs if you're good.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: white;"><a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1573225029/thebookofzines" target="new"><img align="RIGHT" alt="boing boing" border="0" height="126" hspace="10" src="http://www.zinebook.com/images/bookcovers/mutant.gif" width="124" /></a><img height="14" hspace="8" src="http://www.zinebook.com/images/blank.gif" width="14" /><tt>Carla: </tt>We publish to get "for review" freebies like records and books in the mail. Also, if you're a publisher you don't have to kowtow to anyone. You never have to query. You can say what you want, and talk about stuff the mainstream publications avoid either out of fear or ignorance.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: white;"><b>Have you ever published any other zines?</b><img height="14" hspace="8" src="http://www.zinebook.com/images/blank.gif" width="14" /><tt>Mark:</tt> Before we started bOING bOING, I did two issues of a mini-comic called Toilet Devil. I read an article about a gorilla they trained to use sign language. Whenever the gorilla was mad at one of the humans, she'd call them a toilet devil.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: white;"><b>Any general tips for aspiring zinesters?</b><img height="14" hspace="8" src="http://www.zinebook.com/images/blank.gif" width="14" /><tt>Mark:</tt> Keep it small and you'll have more fun. Newsstand distribution is a drag. The freight is expensive, the sell-through rates are low, it is a chore doing the accounting, and distributors are famous for going out of business before they pay you. You'll probably lose money if you try it. Also, don't start a music zine. There are already ten thousand music zines out there. Nobody cares what you think about music anyway.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: white;"><a href="http://www.boingboing.net/" target="new"><img align="RIGHT" alt="bOINGman" border="0" height="170" src="http://www.zinebook.com/interv/images/boingman.gif" width="159" /></a><img height="14" hspace="8" src="http://www.zinebook.com/images/blank.gif" width="14" /><tt>Carla:</tt> Don't get all caught up in mass-circulation and big-time advertisers. Of course if you're creating a magazine you have to play the game, but we're talking <i>zines</i> here. Our goal used to be to make bOING bOING slick and popular, but to do that we had to deal with tightwad distributors and write about stuff we weren't interested in to attract ads. It took all the zest out of zinemaking. It became more business than pleasure, and I was pulling out my hair. Now our goal is to just to have fun. As long as it keeps on giving me pleasure to create it, I'm in. We've cut WAY back on distribution (it's basically subscription-only now) and we throw away requests from advertisers. We went from a circulation of 100 up to 17,000, and then back down to several thousand. I guess we've come full circle.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: white;"><b>What's your favorite part of doing a zine?</b><img height="14" hspace="8" src="http://www.zinebook.com/images/blank.gif" width="14" /><tt>Mark:</tt> Reading a great story submission and designing the zine.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: white;"><img height="14" hspace="8" src="http://www.zinebook.com/images/blank.gif" width="14" /><tt>Carla:</tt> Opening a box that's just come from the printers to see how the new issue looks.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: white;"><b>In my other life, I'm an:</b><img height="14" hspace="8" src="http://www.zinebook.com/images/blank.gif" width="14" /><tt>Mark:</tt> freelance writer and illustrator. The stuff no one will pay me for goes into bOING bOING. And it's always the best stuff, natch.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: white;"><img height="14" hspace="8" src="http://www.zinebook.com/images/blank.gif" width="14" /><tt>Carla: </tt>writer and author. My books are Happy Mutant Handbook, Net Chick and my novel Signal to Noise.</span><br />

Then edit that best material to make it consumable and comprehensive (or at least resemble digestable reading matter).</div><div class="wp-caption aligncenter" id="attachment_621" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; border-bottom-color: rgb(204, 204, 204); border-bottom-style: none; border-bottom-width: 1px; border-color: initial; border-left-color: rgb(204, 204, 204); border-left-style: none; border-left-width: 1px; border-right-color: rgb(204, 204, 204); border-right-style: none; border-right-width: 1px; border-style: initial; border-top-color: rgb(204, 204, 204); border-top-style: none; border-top-width: 1px; clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; outline-color: initial; outline-style: initial; outline-width: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px; text-align: center; vertical-align: baseline; width: 650px;"><a href="http://www.bangback.com/print-matters/zines-matter-still/attachment/zine-battestation/" rel="attachment wp-att-621" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; border-bottom-color: rgb(89, 89, 89); border-bottom-style: dotted; border-bottom-width: 1px; border-color: initial; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-top-width: 0px; color: #191919; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; outline-color: initial; outline-style: initial; outline-width: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;"><img alt="" class="size-full wp-image-621" height="510" src="http://www.bangback.com/files/2010/06/zine-battestation.jpg" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; border-bottom-color: rgb(191, 191, 191); border-bottom-style: solid; border-color: initial; border-color: initial; border-left-color: rgb(191, 191, 191); border-left-style: solid; border-right-color: rgb(191, 191, 191); border-right-style: solid; border-style: initial; border-top-color: rgb(191, 191, 191); border-top-style: solid; border-width: initial; height: auto; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; max-width: 100%; outline-color: initial; outline-style: initial; outline-width: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;" width="640" /></a><br />

Set your standards really high, but be okay with making a simplified version of your dream zine. Spend a moment thinking about readability and pacing. Photocopy or scan everything interesting that you can find. Make drawings or prints <em style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-color: initial; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-top-width: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; outline-color: initial; outline-style: initial; outline-width: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">of </em>these images.</div><div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-color: initial; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-top-width: 0px; color: #404040; margin-bottom: 22px; outline-color: initial; outline-style: initial; outline-width: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Legend has it that “copy of a copy = awful,” but often in zine-making this process is what cleans up the design and makes images more striking. Paste lines disappear, shading becomes more muted, and absolute blacks pop. Copy your black and white images, reducing them if necessary to a size that will fit the pages of your zine.</div><div style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: transparent; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-color: initial; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-top-width: 0px; color: #404040; margin-bottom: 22px; outline-color: initial; outline-style: initial; outline-width: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Go outside your immediate surroundings to find more. Go to the library and check out old periodicals, books with chapter heading illustrations, and photography anthologies. Almost all photo books from before 1975 contain photographs that have enough contrast that they look as good or better when photocopied, especially if they end up on nice paper. Look deeper, through your own archives or your friends’. <span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: black; color: white;">(1) Pamphlets were booklets consisting of a few printer's sheets, folded in various<br />
ways so as to make various sizes and numbers of pages, and sold -- the pages<br />
stitched together loosely, unbound and uncovered -- usually for a shilling or two.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: black; color: white;">The pamphlet [George Orwell, a modern pamphleteer, has written] "is a one<br />
man show. One has complete freedom of expression, including, if one chooses, the freedom to be scurrilous, abusive, and seditious; or, on the other hand, to be<br />
more detailed, serious and "high-brow" than is ever possible in a newspaper or in<br />
most kinds of periodicals... " (Cambridge University Press, 2002)</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="background-color: black; color: white;">(2) "DIY stands for: Do It Yourself and it describes an ethic and a community. The<br />
ethic is one of not needing the assistance of a large company of producing a<br />
service or a product. The ethic is about being able to stand on your own two feet,<br />
its about developing your own ideas and carrying them out, without the backing<br />
of a corporation. The community is built up of those who believe in DIY. Those<br />
people who would rather produce their own "thing" without going and getting<br />
help from big business. The whole idea is, that once big business is involved, that<br />
the original creator of the "thing" is cut out of the creative process, and thus the<br />
"thing" is tarnished. The DIY community is composed of independent publishers,<br />
Artists, musicians, writers, artisans and thinkers." (diysearch, 2002)</span><br />

This primarily includes zines but also independently-published books and comics. Parcell Press developed in December 2003 by me, Taylor, as an umbrella project for my own continued zine and publishing pursuits. I really wanted to create a project through which I could promote zines and get them into new hands, educate people about zines, help the zine community sustain itself, and challenge zinesters and readers to consider zines a more valid artform. So, through Parcell Press I sell zines retail to readers and wholesale to retailers in addition to publishing some zines with the Parcell Press imprint. The name was derived from my first house in Fredericksburg, which was on Parcell Street. Don't mistake it for 'parcel' or we'll both feel awkward.</span></p> <p><span class="F05"> </span><b><span class="F03">why?</span></b></p> <p><span class="F04">The goals of Parcell Press were formed in an attempt to provide a central avenue through which zinesters and zine readers can communicate, sell and buy publications, and have access to resources and work that may or may not be within their own niche in the world of underground publishing. Additionally, this project was launched with zinesters in mind: to provide a cheap, easy, and accessible catalog through which their zines can reach a wider audience. </span><span class="F06"> </span></p> <p><b><span class="F03">who?</span></b></p> <p><span class="F01">Parcell Press </span><span class="F01">is run by me, Taylor, with the occassional help and support of friends. I've been involved with the zine community for at least ten years and don't intend to retire. I like slow-goings and good stories, jokes and productivity. I'm educated in the softest of the humanities (English literature) but I have an affinity for all sorts of cultural studies and often fancy myself a freehand participant observer. My current obsession is places. I'm fond of correspondence and would love to hear from you. </span><span class="F01">I would also love it if you read my zine, which you can buy in the Parcell Press catalog.</span></p> <p><b><span class="F03"> where?</span></b></p> <p><span class="F03">I</span><span class="F04"> grew up in Virginia Beach, sun-soaked, wet, and busy. I started Parcell Press in Fredericksburg, Virginia, where I lived for four enjoying the comfort and closeness of a small town, working out of the closet in the basement bedroom of a tall house downtown. I then ran Parcell Press full-time out of a little house in Old West Durham, North Carolina for about six months before missing Virginia so much that I returned to Richmond, where I now operate Parcell Press out of a weird carriage-house garage loft in the beautiful Fan District. Come say hi!</span></p> <p><span class="F06"> </span><b><span class="F03">what else?</span></b></p> <p><span class="F04">My hope and aspiration is for Parcell Press to become a sustainable endeavor for my various projects and to influence, support, and reflect the efforts of a strong community of creative, progressive, talented voices. </span></p> <p><span class="F04">If you'd like to read more, please visit the following links to read interviews with me or articles about Parcell Press:</span><br /> <a href="http://students.umw.edu/%7Edhutc9mo/Taylor%20Ball.html" target="_top"><span class="F04">Interview on fellow student's website</span><br /><br /></a> <span class="F04">Maytina of </span><a href="http://www.viruszine.com/" target="_blank"><span class="F04">VirusZine.com</span></a><span class="F04"> -- an independent culture magazine based in Canada -- just relaunched her website and posted </span> <span class="F04">a very nice </span><a href="http://www.viruszine.com/_chicken/2006/feb/parcell/" target="_blank"><span class="F04">article/interview</span></a><span class="F04"> with me regarding Parcell Press and zines in general. Sky Cosby’s work came to us via The Portland Zine Symposium 2006 and we’re not the same. His blunt, in-your-face no-frills, parenting zine is a straight lift from his blog <a href="http://www.piratepapa.blogspot.com">Pirate Papa</a> formatted nicely into a half-sized zine. Pirate Papa is much more than any sort of parenting zine though, it’s about the adventure that is parenting. Pirate Papa doesn’t just gloss over the happy crap. Because he’s taking it all in from the thirtysomething perspective you get the understanding that Sky understands the value of work that us momma creatures already knew was out there. The difference is Sky honors it, and Sky nurtures it. He tries to be aware of what’s going on AS it’s going on, and that makes all the difference. Sky’s reference material is long, longer than anyone could ever have imagined, and we are better because of it – the back pages of his zine are long lists of links – good stuff to know not just for the parent, but for the parent to be. Full of cool recipies (crepes…mmm…crepes…) short little blurts (notes on a gay daddy’s blog who lives in a red state) to an in-depth examination about how his daughter’s neurons are firing as they learn the things of life. This is a parenting zine not to be missed. <br /><br />45 pages, $5.00 - shoot me off an e-mail to: sky.cosby(at)gmail.com, slap the money in the mail and I'll pick up the postage!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20983185.post-1147491253577407222006-05-12T20:20:00.000-07:002006-05-12T20:34:53.400-07:009/11 The Myth - The Reality: Were explosives used in the twin towers? In brevity Raf has found his calling, some of these short pieces pack a hefty punch.<br /> Again, Olympia shines through this work, one can almost taste the rain, smell the coffee and feel the soaked bones and cigarettes it took to write these words.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20983185.post-1137403829423813932006-01-16T01:11:00.000-08:002006-01-16T01:32:57.770-08:00This Is The Life: Collected Works: Palestine/Israel 2003<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/6736/820/1600/thisisthelife-willhewitt.0.jpg"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/6736/820/200/thisisthelife-willhewitt.jpg" border="0" alt="" /></a><br /><em>by Will Hewitt</em><br /><br />This collection represents some of the best thoughts I have seen come out of the middle east penned by a white man, person or being. Hewitt's shrewd wit and bitter sense of irony permeate this 62 page 'zine documenting his travels in the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Bank">West Bank</a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaza">Gaza</a> and his stay in <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rafah">Rafah</a> back in 2003 when he carried <a href="http://www.rachelcorrie.org/">Rachel Corrie's</a> body away from the <a href="http://www.spectator-online.com/vnews/display.v/ART/2005/04/15/425fff124ebe8">murderous Israeli bulldozers provided by Caterpillar</a> and here's the <a href="http://www.commondreams.org/news2005/0315-21.htm">article from Common Dreams</a>. Will is again in the gaza strip working with the <a href="http://www.palsolidarity.org/main/">International Solidarity Movement</a> there.
